Funded Early Learning (FEL) is Government funded childcare for all 3 and 4 year olds, and eligible 2 year olds. This can be up to 15 hours a week or less hours a week for more weeks of the year.
Through play activities, children learn language, physical and social skills, and as they get older it helps to prepare them for the routine of going to school. Children who use a FEL place show greater levels of achievement in their school years. It also helps parents and carers access employment and training.
Sheffield has the Best Start Strategy for the delivery of services to families of children aged 5 or under. The strategy has been developed in partnership with health services and the private, voluntary and community sectors.
Our Family centres cover the whole city and offer advice, support and activities for families with children under 5 and maternity care for expectant parents.
