Winter Guidance

In the winter months, it is important to have all the information you need to ensure you are kept informed of how we are managing essential service and how to stay well this winter.

We have supplied some guidance around roads, schools, bins, health, housing and assistance for rough sleepers. You can also download the full winter guide produced by Amey, or sign up to receive alerts.

The Streets Ahead team closely monitors and updates Sheffield citizens on any issues with the roads in winter. You can also listen to your local radio station for traffic updates, and view Travel South Yorkshires website for public transport updates.

Sheffield schools will always do their utmost to stay open, however, changes to opening times may occur due to adverse weather. If you are unsure if your school is opening, you should hear from your child’s school via their usual methods in the first instance.

We aim to collect bins as normal. In bad weather. If bad weather coincides with your usual bin collection day, please put your bin out as usual. We may not be able to collect it at the usual time but will aim to collect it as soon as possible.

Council Houses

If you haven’t already had your boiler serviced make sure you do so before the cold weather starts. If you’re a council housing tenant you are entitled to an annual service so please make sure we have access to your property to allow us to do this.

In winter we all start to dry our clothes inside as the weather turns for the worse. Blocking up radiators with wet clothes can stop the flow of warm air and create condensation which causes damp. Damp can be harmful, especially for those with respiratory problems, long term health conditions and asthma. If drying inside try to use the bathroom or kitchen with the door closed and window open.

Help for rough sleepers

Overnight accommodation is offered to anyone who would be sleeping rough during times of extremely cold weather.

Contact Sheffield’s Street Outreach Team on 0800 066 5358 (free from landlines and mobiles). During evenings and weekends please phone Sheffield City Council’s out of hours housing solution service on 0800 7311 689.

Staying well this winter

  • wrap up and heat your home to at least 18°C (65°F)
  • if you are entitled, make sure you get your flu jab before the 31 December
  • at the first sign of a cough or cold, get immediate advice from your pharmacist before it gets more serious
  • speak to your pharmacist about medicines you should have in stock over winter
  • pick up prescription medications before the Christmas holidays start as many GPs and pharmacies will close over the holidays
  • visit a walk-in centre. They’re mainly run by nurses who can treat minor illnesses and injuries on the spot
  • if you need help over the holiday period when your GP surgery or pharmacy is closed, call NHS 111 or visit their website
  • for parents or carers applying for primary school places, please check that your child is school ready and have had all their preschool vaccinations
