Residential homes offer the same care and help that you would get if a relative or friend looked after you. Staff in a care home can help you with:

  • washing and dressing
  • meal times
  • going to the toilet
  • help and support to gain skills that can help you to be independent

Choose a care home

Visit the home wih your family or friends. There’s a trail period of up to 4 weeks before you finally make up your mind.

Paying for your care in a home

We will help you to pay the fees for residential care if we think this is the kind of help you need, and if we think you can’t afford to pay for it yourself.

Comments and complaints

If you have any comments or suggestions about a home please tell the staff, manager or matron at the home.

Many homes have a ‘residents committee’ where you can put forward your ideas.

Adopt a care home

The 'Adopt a Care Home' pilot involved children to improve quality in care homes.  The pilot aimed to:

  • improve education about dementia
  • increase cohesion, collaboration, community links, citizenship, compassion and companionship

By linking with partners across Social Care and Education, the pilot aimed to create stronger links with our care home providers, their residents and the younger generation.

Hurlfield View care home was linked with Prince Edward Primary School for the initial pilot.  A dementia awareness programme started at the school and the Registered Managers from the care home assessed how the programme developed.

The 'Adopt a Care Home' Scheme has now been rolled out citywide.  To date, 4 schools and care homes have shown an interest:

  • Watermead linked with Herries Lodge
  • Watercliffe Meadow linked with Springwood
  • University Technical College Sheffield linked with Burnt Tree Croft
  • Malin Bridge linked with Loxley Park.

Guidance for providers

Our Quality & Performance/Contracts Team works alongside the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to monitor care homes.

We link in closely with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), regularly sharing information about home performance.  All of the aspects of our monitoring relate to the CQC’s 5 key questions: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.  We have recently modified our monitoring tool to include extensive observations of practice in the delivery of care.

Like the CCG, we provide feedback and care homes are sent an action plan.  Our role is to support homes to identify areas that need improvement and work with them to ensure that necessary changes are put in place. We also find areas of good practice in homes and share these more widely for learning across the sector. 

The CCG work in partnership with us to manage homes that are in risk and provide additional support as required.

The Quality in Care Homes and Home Support team work in conjunction with us to ensure effective processes are in place to monitor that care homes are delivering good quality and safe services. Routine quality monitoring visits are carried out by the Team, using a quality framework agreed jointly with us which reflects the requirements of the Health and Social Care Act.

Following the visit Quality Officers provide feedback and the care home is sent written confirmation of the agreed actions and timescales from the visit.  Homes are asked to provide evidence and often re-visited to ensure actions have been completed within agreed timescales.
