Details taken from gravestones and other memorials in churchyards, cemeteries, burials grounds as well as the interiors of church/chapel buildings. These are mainly from the 19th century onwards, though some interior monuments date back to the 16th century.
Location of records
Most are available at Sheffield Archives at Shoreham Street. The Local Studies Library in the Central Library also has some Monumental Inscriptions (MIs).
No advance booking or ordering is required.
We can normally supply copies for private study purposes, subject to the usual copyright regulations. Please contact us for further information.
Many gravestone inscriptions have been transcribed. They often contain some good biographical detail and details of family members and are therefore a most useful resource for family history.
