Our service

We offer a nationality checking service to assist people who want to apply for British Citizenship by:

  • checking your application form is completed correctly
  • checking, copying and certifying your passport and other documents
  • making sure that you have included the right payment
  • sending your application safely and quickly to the Home Office by guaranteed next day delivery

This is strictly a check and send service only. Your application will be assessed by the Home Office. If the Home Office needs more information they will contact you at the address given.

Book an appointment

To book an appointment please contact the Sheffield Register Office:

  • you must attend your appointment yourself
  • if you are married or in a civil partnership and want to make a joint application, both of you must attend
  • children under 18 don’t need to attend

The appointment will usually take between 45 and 90 minutes.

Documents to bring:

  • completed citizenship application form
  • original copy of your ‘Life in the UK’ test certificate
  • all the documents listed in the application form guidelines
  • application fee


The fee is £80 per adult and £30 per child  inclusive of VAT in addition to the Home Office fee.

You cannot book an appointment without paying the full fee. This can be paid by phone or in person.

Home Office fee

Your Home Office fee will be posted with your application. You can pay by postal order, cheque (made payable to ‘The Accounting Officer, Home Office’) or by credit or debit card.

‘Life in the UK’ test

All applicants must adhere to the ‘Language and Life in the UK’ rules, which are accessible on the Home Office website.

Immigration advice

Our checking service is not there to give you immigration advice. If you have queries about your application you should contact your legal advisers or the Home Office.

Changes to Language Requirements for Citizenship

From November 2015, IELTS Life Skills and GESE have replaced:

  • ESOL Entry 3
  • ESOL Level 1
  • ESOL Level 2

Exceptions & exempt countries


There are some exceptions to the ‘Language and Life in the UK’ rules:

  • over 65 years old
  • people who have a physical or mental condition which severely restricts their ability to learn English/communication and/or take a test
  • minors under 18 years old

Exempt countries:

The following countries are exempt from having to take the second part of the requirement as they are majority English speaking countries. They will however be required to take the ‘Life in the UK’ test.
