Christmas in Sheffield

Getting festive in Sheffield this year....

It's that time of year when we enjoy all sorts of festive traditions and treats.  Many of us celebrated differently last year, and some celebrations may be a little different this year too.  We're planning all sorts of things to help get you in the festive mood, and here's some ways for you to enjoy Sheffield over the Christmas season....

Sheffield Christmas Lights Switch-On

Sheffield turns up the festive vibes at the Christmas Lights Switch On event taking place on Sunday 21 November from 2 - 6.30pm.  This year’s event is a little different from previous years as we're having a dual switch on from the Town Hall Square and Barkers Pool. There’s plenty of entertainment planned, so bring your friends and family along to meet children’s film and TV costume characters, spot the stars from Sheffield Theatres panto, be fascinated by Inka the giant animated polar bear, wander around the Christmas market and maybe even meet Father Christmas. There’s also balloon modelling, storytelling & craft activities, fairground rides and some festive music!

We’re lighting up the sky with an exciting firework display, so come along and enjoy watching and wandering around the event soaking up the festive atmosphere!

Big wheel & carousel

The big wheel is gently spinning on Fargate, so you can book a trip to see the city from a different view. And the ever-popular, traditional carousel has arrived back in Barkers Pool if you fancy a festive spin.  Open 10am to 8pm, Monday to Sunday.

Sheffield Christmas Trail

The Sheffield Christmas Trail is coming back to Sheffield city centre from Saturday 27 November to Friday 24 December featuring Brearley Bear in a brand new adventure.

After so long without seeing any of his friends, Brearley Bear is planning to organise a reunion and host a special Christmas party! But oh dear, his party invitations have got all mixed up!

This free, interactive fun experience for families to enjoy is organised by Sheffield BID.

Festive bars

The Alpine Bar will be joining the Christmas market at the top of Fargate, giving you chance to enjoy a hot chocolate, glass of mulled wine or a wide selection of other drinks. Open from 10am-10pm daily...

Topping up the festive bars this year, we have a new double decked lodge style bar, The Alpine Lodge, in the Peace Gardens for another place to grab a refreshment when you need it!  Again, it will be open from 10am-10pm daily...

Santa and his elves are back in their grotto at the edge of the Peace Gardens on Pinstone Street in Sheffield city centre until 24 December. Come and visit him and let him know what's on your Christmas wish list - and if you've been naughty or nice!

He'll be in his grotto 10am to 6pm weekdays, 10am to 7pm Saturdays and 11am to 6pm on Sundays.

Shopping with our retailers and supporting them at this time of year is really important.  Shops in Sheffield’s centre, local districts and markets offer everything you need for a great festive season, so whether you're shopping in the city centre, spending in your local area, or visiting local retailers online, you'll be able to find everything you need to get your Christmas wrapped up....

Christmas Market

Sheffield's popular Christmas Market is back - a place where shoppers can enjoy that festive feeling as they browse a huge choice of seasonal goodies on offer from the traditional wooden cabins located on Fargate, Pinstone Street and around the Peace Gardens. It’s the perfect place to stock up on gifts, foods and treats for the festive period!

Around 50 traders will be selling a huge range of gifts, crafts and refreshments from 10am to 6pm Sunday to Thursday and until 8pm Friday and Saturday. Enjoy a wander around, check out hundreds of products on sale and maybe try some tasty treats too!

Sheffield Markets

Support our local indepedent traders this year and shop in your local market.  With a massive range of fresh foods, gifts and all sorts more on offer, you'll be spoilt for choice!

Public transport

If you’re travelling by public transport over the festive period, you may need some information on buses and trams:

Please read guidelines before you travel, wear a face covering and have a safe journey.

Whilst we're enjoying the festive season, we need to make sure we all celebrate safely to keep ourselves and others as safe as we can.  If you need any of our information on Coronavirus, changes to our services, the support available and all sorts more, please visit our Coronavirus Hub.  Stay safe Sheffield and we wish you all a happy festive season.....
