Your Dependants
What is a Dependant?
A Dependant is any member of your household whom you receive Child Benefit for. These are usually your own children, but could, in certain circumstances, it could be your brother or sister, niece, nephew or grandchildren.
Do you take into account Child Care costs when working out my entitlement to Benefit?
Yes, we can take child care costs into account if the child care is provided by a registered childminder, nursery or after-school club.
You will need to provide us with proof of your child care costs, including the registration number of the child care provider. The easiest way to do so is to download and print off the Proof of Child Care Costs Form below.
Alternatively, go to Points of Contact for Benefits Help for information about where to obtain a form.
What happens when the child leaves school?
Child Benefit stops being paid when a child leaves school, unless the child enters full time further education, in which case it is paid until the child is 20. You must tell us as soon as you stop receiving Child Benefit for any member of your household. If you don’t tell us you may be overpaid benefit. We would usually ask you to pay this back to us.
When a child leaves school, but continues in further education, you must tell us this, and also provide written proof of the course the child is taking. If you don’t do this, we would have to treat your child as a non-dependant, which could mean you get less benefit.
My dependant will shortly be reaching their 18th birthday, do I have to inform you?
Yes, if your Dependant is still in receipt of Child Benefit when he/she becomes 18, you must contact us straight away to confirm that you are still receiving Child Benefit for them. Again, if you don’t do this, we would have to treat your child as a non-dependant, which could mean you get less benefit.
How do I contact you?

Is there any more information I need to know?
The Benefits notification letter gives details of the allowances included in your Applicable Amounts for dependant children in your family. The various 'levels' are based upon the age of each child and are as follows:
Level 1 - from birth to the first Monday in September following the 16th birthday.
Level 2 - from the first Monday in the September following the 16th birthday, up to the age of 20.
As well as these amounts, if you have one or more children you qualify for the Family Premium.
If you are a single parent you will qualify for the Family Premium (Lone Parent) if you have continuously had it included in your Council Benefit claim from before 1st April 1998. Single parents who claim benefit after 1st April 1998 will qualify for the normal rate of Family Premium, this includes single parents who claim Council Benefits after coming off Income Support or Income Based Job Seekers Allowance.
