Your Council, Your Say March 2008

Keeping Sheffield Cleaner

In March 2008, the fourth in a planned series of four Your Council, Your Say events took place.

The theme was making Sheffield an even cleaner place to live, work and visit and the role that the Council, and residents have in helping to achieve this.

Residents are our eyes and ears across the city and we wanted help to identify places that need attention.  As in previous years, it was also an opportunity for residents to talk to council officers and Councillors to give feedback about any other aspect of Council services.

There were several different events which took place during March including visits to schools and Area Panels and a marquee on Town Hall Square.

Last year the Council:

  • Issued over 300 fines to people who have dropped litter, fly posted or damaged property with graffiti

  • Removed over 7,800 fly posters from main roads into the city

  • Purchased 24 new cleaning machines to keep the city centre and local neighbourhoods clean and litter free

  • Won five Green Flag and two Community Green Pennant Awards for parks and open spaces

Results
During the two days that the marquee was in Town Hall Square, approximately 1500 people passed through to complete questionnaires and feedback forms and speak to Council officers and Councillors.

The following were repeatedly highlighted as areas of particular concern for residents:

  • Dog fouling
  • Litter
  • Fly tipping
  • Graffiti
  • Tree maintenance (in parks and on highways)

As at previous events, many residents also wanted to know more about recycling facilities and help with disposing of green waste.

Every request for clean up has been investigated and action taken where possible.  If it has not been possible for us to act, for example if the site reported is privately owned, we have explained why.
