Indices of Deprivation
The Indices of Deprivation are a means of identifiying how deprived areas of the country are. The statitics are presented as a set of scores for a range of topic areas, or ‘domains’. These scores do not mean anything in themselves but are used to identify how an area compares with other parts of the country. The higher the score, the more deprived the area is for that topic. The scores are also combined into an overall score or index. More information is available from the Department of Communities & Local Government website.
The 2004 Indices of Deprivation are published for ‘Super Output Areas’, which have a population size of 1-4,000 people. This information is best viewed in map form. For Sheffield, we have also generated scores for wards and neighbourhoods.
