Information News
Sheffield Facts & Figures is a new way into information about the city and its neighbourhoods. This news page will be frequently updated to provide regular bulletins about its content - new or updated information items, new sources, new developments.
Population statistics
Population estimates are released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in the late summer for the previous year. The mid-2007 estimates were published in August 2008. The mid-2007 estimate for Sheffield is 530,300, an increase of 4,500 on the previous year.
Revised projections of the population to the year 2029 also have been published by the ONS. These revised figures show a slower rate of growth in Sheffield's population than the previous projections. They do not reflect the recent large increases in Sheffield's population estimates.
See population pages for details.
Revised Indices of Deprivation
The Indices of Deprivation reported in Sheffield Facts & Figures were first published in 2004. The Government's Department of Communities and Local Government has recently published a new set of indices for 2007. Sheffield summaries are now included in the Facts & Figures pages. In the meantime, if you wish to see the revised data in full, go to the DCLG website.
Also within the Indices of Deprivation pages are local data on receipt of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit. This data has a very close association with the government's indices of deprivation and provides another useful indicator of poverty.
Economic Updates
Now within the Local Economy pages is a new monthly Sheffield Economic Update. The first issue is for October 2008. Future issues will also be published here.
The updates will provide a brief look at the latest developments in the local economy.
