Sheffield Facts and Figures
This section provides a wide range of statistics and information about Sheffield.
Sheffield is one of England’s largest cities and a metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire. It has grown from largely industrial roots to encompass a wide economic base. It obtained world-wide recognition during the 19th century for its production of steel and many innovations in the industry were developed locally including crucible and stainless steel. This led to an almost ten-fold increase in the population during the industrial revolution. It gained its city charter in 1893 and officially became titled the City of Sheffield.
