Racial Harassment
The Council has produced a corporate Racial Harassment Policy. This document sets out Sheffield City Council’s policy for addressing racial harassment. It is intended to inform all directorate and service policies and procedures, which may be used to address racial harassment.
This policy has been produced for a number of reasons. As a Council we are committed to meeting our legislative duties under the Race Relations Amendment Act, which places an obligation on the Council to use the recommended definition of a racist incident. Also, our own Best Value Review of Services to Black and Minority Ethnic People recommended a consistent approach to dealing with racial harassment across all Council Directorates. Additionally, we are working through the levels of the Equality Standard for Local Government which require authorities to use the recommended definition of a racist incident and to have mechanisms in place for responding to harassment. Most importantly, the Council is keen to raise awareness about racial harassment, to improve the effectiveness of its services to people being harassed, and to promote good practice and the benefits of working together with partners to address racial harassment throughout the city.
