Race Equality Scheme

Our Race Equality Scheme expired in April 2005 and since then we have reviewed our progress and undertaken work to develop a Corporate Equality Scheme which we have recently been consulting on. Our Corporate Equality Scheme contains our plans and targets for all equality groups and addresses gender, disability and sexual orientation in addition to race.  The Corporate Equality Scheme has now replaced our Race Equality Scheme and runs from 2005-2008.  We will be reviewing it every year during this three-year period.  To get more information and download our Corporate Equality Scheme please follow this link.

Copies of the Council’s old Race Equality Scheme and the Race Equality Scheme summary document for Communities for 2002-2005 are still available to download below.  Please note that this document no longer forms the Council's current work plan, it is solely for information.  The documents are available in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format and as a Word file below.

The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 came about as a result of the MacPherson report into the death of Stephen Lawrence.  It places Councils under a general duty to promote race equality.

This means we must take account of race equality in all day-to-day work of developing and delivering services, how we employ and develop staff, and in all our plans and strategies.

Our original Race Equality Scheme (RES) for 2002-2005 summarised our approach to race equality and including how we planned to meet our duties to:
  • Eliminate unlawful racial discrimination
  • Promote equality of opportunity
  • Promote good relations between people of different racial groups, in everything we do.

Our Race Equality Scheme set out a three-year programme of actions for the Council to undertake to make sure that all our functions, policies and strategies were directed towards fulfilling these duties.

We also wrote a summary of our Race Equality Scheme for our ‘Communities’.  This was a short guide to explain what our Race Equality Scheme meant for Sheffield’s diverse communities.
