Domestic Abuse Policy
Sheffield City Council adopted a Domestic Violence Policy in April 1999 and the Council's Corporate Domestic Abuse Officer Group (CDAOG) works to ensure that the responsibilities in the Policy are incorporated into and promoted within each Council service.
The term domestic abuse more accurately reflects a range of abusive and controlling behaviour than the term domestic violence which has been most commonly used until recently.
The Council has played a key role in establishing the Sheffield Domestic Abuse Forum (SDAF) and contributed to and signed up to the two three-year Multi-Agency Strategies in Sheffield 2000 – 2003 and 2004 – 2007. We will be helping to develop a new 3 year Domestic & Sexual Abuse Strategy 2008-11.
Research shows that violence and abuse in a domestic setting is clearly a gender issue. Overwhelmingly women and children experience violence and abuse from men.
