Disability

Welcome to our pages of particular interest to disabled people. We know from the census that at least 10% of Sheffield people have some form of impairment or long-term health problem - that’s over 50,000 people.  We also know that this number will increase over the coming years.  A survey of Council tenants, carried out by Sheffield Homes, revealed that over 50% of households contain at least one disabled person.

Sheffield City Council would like to make sure that its services are accessible to everyone.  The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) requires us to provide an equal standard of service to all our customers. This principle should underpin everything we do.

Our Disability Equality Scheme (DES) can be downloaded from the bottom of this page. The DES sets out Sheffield City Councils plans to improve the lives of disabled people in the City.  You can challenge us on this at any time.

You can also download the Annual Review of our Disability Equality Scheme below, this year we have conducted a self assessment in line with Government guidelines, next year the review will consist of a public consultation.

You can also access our Reasonable Adjustment Policy for customers from the Reasonable Adjustments page.

However, should you not find answers in these pages then please do not hesitate to contact Charlie Bailey, Principle Policy officer (Disability) for further help and guidance.
You can email Charles Bailey at charles.bailey@sheffield.gov.uk or call: 0114 2735861

Or you can write to: The Equality Team, Corporate Policy Unit, Town Hall, Sheffield, S1 2HH

There are also web pages that provide information on Disability Issues in the Work Place.  They are maintained by the People Management Team in the Organisational Development & Communications Department and focus on employment issues.
