Corporate Equality Scheme

What is the CES?

Sheffield is a diverse city.  As a Council we are a major provider of services, and a major employer within the city.  Our Corporate Equality Scheme (CES) makes a corporate commitment to taking forward actions that will enable Sheffield City Council to achieve the aspirations set out in our ’Valuing Equality and Diversity’ Policy, and to fulfil the requirements of the Equality Standard for Local Government.  It also covers our race equality duties under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000.

Given that we have a comprehensive ‘Valuing Equality and Diversity’ policy covering race, gender, disability, age and sexual orientation we have developed a generic scheme which covers all these areas.  Our generic scheme will help us to review our services whilst recognising the complexity of our community.

The Corporate Equality Scheme is the City Council's principal planning document for meeting equality-related issues in service delivery and employment. It has been built upon processes that were introduced to deliver Equality Action Planning in the City Council.  It sets out our approach to mainstreaming equality within every service and strategy of the Council, with the headline targets that will be taken forward corporately.  The corporate actions will be followed through with targets for individual services.

The Council has also produced the Gender Equality Scheme 2007-10 and the Disability Equality Scheme 2006 - 09 as additional documents to be used on line with the Corporate Equality Scheme, you can view these documents on the Gender and Disability web pages.

Whilst the scheme will run for 3 years (2005-2008), it is a live document which will be developed and updated through the course of each year to reflect progress on targets and new areas of work.

A review of the Corporate Equality Scheme is currently under way and the report will be available on this webpage in October 2008.

We have also developed a glossary which contains useful definitions of words and phrases commonly used in the field of equality and diversity.  Many are terms we use in the Corporate Equality Scheme but some are general equality and diversity terms and others explain the role of various groups and teams in the Council who have a role to play in equality work.  You can download the full glossary of equality terms at the bottom of the page.  A streamlined glossary is included in the Corporate Equality Scheme which only covers terms used in the scheme.

You can download both the Corporate Equality Scheme and Glossary of Equality Terms at the bottom of this page.
