Emergency Planning

Major incidents, both natural or man made, can happen without warning with catastrophic consequences. It is therefore essential that as a City we are prepared for a wide range of scenarios.

The Emergency Planning Team was set up in April 1999 with the aim of preparing, maintaining and co-ordinating a robust and effective City Council response to emergencies. In the event of a Major Incident the department will work alongside the Emergency Services in an effort to minimise its effects. We are here to provide support and care for the community in a time of crisis.

How do we do this?

The Local Authority could provide:

  • Shelter, food and basic personal items for those affected
  • Facilities where advice and information can be obtained
  • Regular communication and updates
  • Assistance to Emergency Services e.g. road signage, clearing debris and emergency lighting
  • Traffic diversions, surveys of damaged buildings, demolition, advice on environmental and public health issues

The Council will also take a lead role in the restoration of both the environment and issues affecting the community.
