Comprehensive Performance Assessment 2006

Sheffield City Council has been awarded a four star, excellent rating in the Comprehensive Performance Assessment, the third year running that it has been awarded the highest rating. The Council is also considered to be an authority that is ‘improving well’.

Every year, a Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) is carried out to measure how well councils are delivering services for local people and communities. The CPA is carried out by the Audit Commission, an independent public body that is responsible for ensuring money is well spent by Councils. They use a star system from 1 star - 4 stars and also give a direction of travel score.

The Audit Commission has judged Sheffield City Council to be ‘improving well’, in their assessment of the Council’s direction of travel.

From last year’s assessment, there’s been an improvement in the rating of adult social care services from good to excellent. These services are now among the best performing in the country.

The scores for the major services provided by the Council were:
  • Adult Social Care (3 stars - excellent) - note 3 stars is best rating for this service
  • Children’s Services (3 stars - good) - this followed a major review
  • Use of Resources (3 stars - good);
  • Housing Services (3 stars - good);
  • Benefit Services (3 stars - good);
  • Cultural Services (2 stars - fair); and
  • Environmental Services (2 stars - fair).

Commenting on the CPA rating, Deputy Leader of Sheffield City Council, Cllr Steve Jones said: "I’m really pleased with the progress that we’ve made and that we continue to be rated ‘Excellent’. But we’re not complacent - there are still major challenges we need to address, and we will not be taking our foot off the accelerator."

Sir Bob Kerslake, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council said: "I am pleased that we have sustained our excellent position and would like to thank the managers and staff in the Council for their efforts."

The Council has identified the environment, attainment and better customer care as priorities for improvement. We have a bid for major new investment for highways and we have got encouraging responses on satisfaction with cleanliness.
