Legal and Governance
Liz Bashforth is the Assistant Chief Executive and is the head of Legal and Governance. She is also the Monitoring Officer of the Council. The other members of the Legal and Governance Management Team are Frances Woodhead (Head of Legal), Nicola Talbot (Practice Manager), Lyn Vickers (Administrative Services Manager) and Philip Walshaw (Acting Committee Secretariat Manager).

Register Office
- Registers all births, still births and deaths
- Solemnises and registers marriages and civil partnerships in the Register Office and at Approved Premises
- Conducts Citizenship Ceremonies and provides a Nationality Checking Service
- Provides copy birth, death, marriage and civil partnership certificates

- This section is responsible for compiling the electoral register and organises the conduct of all elections

- Operates a Local Land Charges Register
- Administers replies to additional enquiries of the local authority

- Prepare and issue a wide variety of Statutory Orders and Notices e.g.
- Tree Preservation Orders

- Provide advice and represent the Council in Court, and handles claims

- All property transactions including Council House 'Right to Buy', sales, purchases, granting or taking of leases or tenancies.

Law Library
- Provision of hard copy and on line legal books and periodicals, tracking of legislation, and research on behalf of Legal and Governance

- Provides an Emergency Planning Function
