Touch Screen Kiosks

Public Data Web kiosk in Sheffield city centre
Public DataWeb (PDWeb) delivered a European Commission funded project, the purpose of which was to develop the best practice model for the free delivery of round the clock accessible digital democracy enabled touch screen kiosks throughout the EC.

Following on from the project's successful delivery of a best practice model, further funding from the EC has been granted to deliver information to and from the public access points by broadband satellite (the SATIN Project).

By combining all information at one access point, patterns of usage become established. Using very high quality street-furniture and placing it in the busiest locations, the public become familiar with the system. The trivial, such as the TV listings, contrasts with the more serious process of using the screen to interact and provide evidence to Parliamentary Select Committees (with the Hansard Society).

The Next Chapter

Of course, the successful take-up of any product depends upon the extent to which it was needed in the first place. Already, our city centre kiosks are attracting more than 2,000 hits per day. To ensure their ongoing usefulness, we will add extra information and services continuously. The kiosks allow selective access to web sites. Access to these sites can also be simplified so that all the public and not just the computer literate can use them. Emails and text messaging can be sent and tickets and services booked and paid for through the use of smartcards.
