On the 25th June 2007, Sheffield experienced its worst flooding for over 140 years. It affected thousands of residents and businesses in the city and the council played its part alongside the other responding agencies and voluntary organisations. The recovery work is still ongoing involving a number of council services.

The work of the Emergency Planning Team

Major incidents, both natural or man made, can happen without warning with catastrophic consequences. It is therefore essential that as a City we are prepared for a wide range of scenarios.

Our Emergency Planning Team was set up in April 1999 with the aim of preparing, maintaining and co-ordinating a robust and effective City Council response to emergencies. In the event of a Major Incident the department will work alongside the Emergency Services in an effort to minimise its effects. We are here to provide support and care for the community in a time of crisis.

How do we do this?

The Local Authority could provide:

  • Shelter, food and basic personal items for those affected
  • Facilities where advice and information can be obtained
  • Regular communication & updates
  • Assistance to Emergency Services e.g. road signage, clearing debris and emergency lighting
  • Traffic diversions, surveys of damaged buildings, demolition, advice on environmental & public health issues

The Authority will also take a lead role in the restoration of both the environment and issues affecting the community
