Additional Information
Please see the questions below for additional information regarding the electoral process. If we have not answered your query from the information contained within these pages please contact us and we will be happy to help.
Can you vote if you are in prison?
No, but you can vote if you are out on license, on parole or on remand.
I am a member of the Armed Forces, how do I apply to vote as a Service Voter?
Please download an application form from the bottom of this page or alternatively please contact us.
I have Power of Attorney for someone, what is the process for me to register to vote on that person's behalf?
Having Power of Attorney does not give you any special privilege in Electoral law. You can apply to vote as a Proxy but if the voter is incapable of expressing how they wish to vote in that election no one can vote on their behalf.
Why do staff in the polling station write down my electoral number before they allow me to vote?
The law requires every ballot paper to have a unique serial number and that a record is kept of the serial number of the ballot paper that is issued to every elector.
If I make a mistake on the ballot paper in the polling station, can I have a new ballot paper?
If you spoil your ballot paper in the polling station you can ask the polling staff to issue you with another one provided you have not put the first ballot paper you were given in the ballot box. If you have already out your ballot paper into the ballot box you cannot be given another one.
English is my second language, will there be instructions in other languages at the polling station?
Unfortunately, no. the law only provides for election materials to be published in English and Welsh.
Is postal voting secure?
We comply with all the guidelines that are issued by the government to ensure that the postal voting process is as secure as possible. We also collect personal identifiers (your signature and date of birth) that are always checked.
I'm going on holiday; will my postal vote arrive on time?
We have a strict timetable when we have to send postal votes out and cannot alter this to meet individual requirements. Postal votes are usually issued one to two weeks before an election. If you feel that this will be too late for you, you could apply for a proxy vote or we can send your postal vote to your holiday address.
I have received two postal votes
Please check that they are not for different elections in your area, for example, a local election and a parish election. Are both postal votes addressed to yourself? Have you applied for a postal proxy vote? Are both postal votes for this year? Please contact us if you need clarification.
