If You Move Home

I’m moving. What do I need to do?

Moving home can be exciting, but it can also be a stressful time. There are a lot of things to think about and plan for, including telling the Council that you have moved.

There are many departments in the Council, which means that you will need to tell each one you deal with, you have moved home.

We are currently working hard to introduce a system for you to only have to tell us once that you have moved and your information will be passed to all the relevant Council services to update their records.

But until we have this system working, please contact each of the departments you deal with separately to tell them about your move.

Why do I need to tell Council Tax?

It is very important you tell us as soon as possible, that you have moved. Your Council Tax payments for the financial year must be paid by the 31st of March. So the earlier you inform us, the sooner we will send you a bill and the more time you will have to pay it.

If you move house we may need to transfer your Council Tax account from your old address to your new one.

There are many ways to inform us of your move but we recommend you inform us by completing our form to tell us you have moved

If you want to tell us another way please contact us at Council Tax

What we need to know

In all cases we will need to know the following information;

  • Your name and the name(s) of your spouse or partner

  • The address that you are moving from and the Council Tax account number (if you were responsible for paying Council Tax at that address)

  • The date you moved out

  • The date of sale of your old home (if you were the owner) or the end date of your lease/tenancy (if you were a tenant)

  • Your new address

  • The date you moved in

  • The date of purchase (if you own your new home) or start date of your lease/tenancy (if you are the tenant).

I have bought (or sold) my home

If you were the owner of your old home and/or bought your new one, please tell us;

  • The name of the person who bought your old home and (if you know it) their old address.

  • Your solicitors name and address.

I am (or was) a tenant

If you rented your old home or are renting your new one, please tell us;

  • The name of your landlord (and address if you know it)

  • If the property you rented (or now rent) is furnished by your landlord.

Your water supply will be provided from either Yorkshire Water or Severn Trent.

If you have recently moved home, you may want to find out about your area. The website Upmystreet.com has useful local information about your area.
