BROOMHILL, CENTRAL AND NETHER EDGE AREA PANEL
MEETING THURSDAY 6 JULY 2006
AREA CO-ORDINATORS REPORT

PURPOSE OF REPORT

To update Members on progress in the implementation of the Area Plan, identify key issues of importance to the Area and answer any outstanding questions

ISSUES
A BIT OF A BLOOM
The BCNE Area Panel has funded temporary planters in Broomhill and Nether Edge adding a splash of colour to the respective shopping centres.

WALKING THE PATCH
The most recent of the Panels series of ‘Walkabouts’ took place around Psalter Lane with colleagues from NENG.  A number of issues were raised and actions agreed

STUDENTS IN THE COMMUNITY
The meeting reported to the last Panel had actions stemming from it which are being monitored and there have already been sub meetings arranged to progress matters and also a recall meeting has been arranged for November.

SHARROW PROJECT
Sharrow School
The building of the new Sharrow Primary School is coming along well and is on target. The foundations for the nursery provision are in place and most of the services are done. A trial bore hole is being done in the park to see if the “ground source heating” will be feasible. A new model of the site has been created, along with a computerised image of the inside of the building. These were on display at the recent school fair and will be shown at the parents evening and Sharrow Festival (technology permitting).

Adventure Playground
The new adventure playground equipment has been installed and is being road tested by local young people already before its official opening in July.

Mount Pleasant Park
The implementation of the masterplan for the park is in hand, with work due to start after the Sharrow Festival. The timetable has a staggered approach to delivery due to the constraints on the budget, but all the major items are in hand. The interface between the park and the school, known colloquially as “Area 17”, has been tricky to design but a solution has now been found that the school and park are happy with.

Integration of services
We have begun discussion with various potential users of the new community hub, but we have also been looking at ways of integrating services even if they are physically separate.

New community hub
We have begun to design the new community hub, which will be on the site of the current Junior school. The plan is still to include the library, youth facilities, adult education facilities and some community use. In addition, Sharrow CAB are keen to have a presence and it is likely that some community health services will be delivered from this site. We hope to finalise the design of the new building in September, with a planning application being lodged by the end of 2006, in order to start work once the school vacates in July/August 2007.
