2.
PROCEEDINGS OF THE ROADSHOW

This was the second of three planned Area Panel Roadshows to be held during the 2007/08 Municipal Year, within the different neighbourhoods of the Panel’s area to give local residents the opportunity to discuss issues of local interest with Area Panel Link Officers, Panel Members and representatives of the Panel’s partners.

The event comprised a number of display boards and stands, staffed by the Link Officers and representatives of the Panel’s partners, and provided an opportunity for local residents to engage with them and discuss issues of interest within the Nether Edge and Sharrow areas.

Age Concern

A number of residents visited the stand to view what services were offered by Age Concern, one raising specific concerns about the proposed children’s playground at Broadfield Park.  A number of people indicated that whilst they were aware of Age Concern, they were not aware of the range of services offered and did not know that services started for people when they were 50 years of age.

Nether Edge Neighbourhood Group

            The following concerns were noted:-

·                    John Thomson’s beech tree carving in Chelsea Park was deteriorating rapidly – could some form of preservative be applied?

·                    A number of wooden railing planks around the new playground in Chelsea Park were now missing, making the area dangerous for young children.  How much longer would it be before funding was agreed to insert metal railings and in the meantime, could some temporary netting be put up at the earliest opportunity?

·                    The entrance to Chelsea Park on Brincliffe Edge Road, looked unsightly, with rusty railings, nettles and its design was very dangerous for children and animals.  When would this entrance/exit be upgraded?

Chris Venables indicated that she welcomed the event as a good opportunity to network with other local organisations, including the local Police Community Safety Officers.

Friends of Sheffield General Cemetery

Brian Holmshaw had a number of large display boards showing pictures and photographs of, and activities in, the General Cemetery, together with a number of free information leaflets and publications for sale.  There were also free copies of gravestone rubbing boxes, which proved popular with the children in attendance.

Mr. Holmshaw indicated that he found the event very useful as he was able to talk to representatives of other Panel partners and local community groups, and received a high level of praise from local residents for the work being undertaken in the Cemetery.

Sheffield 50+

Jane Tanser attended the event and displayed various information on Sheffield 50+.  She found the event very useful from a networking point of view and assisted an older person in getting a compost bin delivered to their property through Veolia.

She made a number of new contacts and recruited some new members to the Group.

Veolia

Annabel Johnston displayed and provided information on Veolia’s services, focusing on reducing, re-using and recycling.  There was also information on composting, Recycling Centres, how to get rid of bulky items of waste and the green garden waste sack collection.

Sharrow Forum

Julia Udall found the event very useful as it enabled her and her colleagues to talk to representatives of Panel partners and other community groups, particularly in relation to the Sharrow Project.  There was strong support for a mini Masterplan that would strategically unite the many different projects that were already underway.
Comments were received from the young people in attendance, and they were very creative in the way they responded to the collages of the sites throughout Sharrow.
Although there were not many local residents in attendance, those who attended were well informed and expressed a wish to have further involvement/information.

Sheffield Homes

Louise Ashcroft and Jonathan Lowe displayed various information on the work undertaken, and services offered by Sheffield Homes.

Friends of Abbeydale Picture House

The Friends displayed information, plans and photographs on the history of, and current activities/events being held at the Picture House.

Sheffield Hallam University

Marie May received a number of enquiries from local residents on the following issues:-

  • What action the University was taking regarding student behaviour in the community, specifically relating to noise nuisance, litter, bins on streets and car parking.

  • Courses for the general public and how family members could gain access to University, as well course fees, qualifications and subjects.

  • Job vacancies at the University.

  • The closure of the Psalter Lane Campus and the proposed development on that site.

  • The current number of students and whether such numbers would increase or decrease over the next few years.

  • The construction of further student accommodation.

  • The University’s influence over the SYPTE to improve bus services in the area.

  • Student volunteers and volunteering projects.

South Yorkshire Police

PCSOs Sarah Hague and Martin Green received a number of enquiries from local residents regarding police and community safety issues, specifically regarding home and car security and problems relating to off-road motor bikes.              They also received a number of enquiries regarding planning, traffic regulations, parks and gardens, which they noted and promised to forward to the relevant Council Services.

Comment Sheets

Local residents were also given the opportunity of completing a comment sheet, providing their views on any issues in the area, including a general section on questions and comments, how they found out about the event, what they thought the Council could do to make Nether Edge and Sharrow better places to live, whether there were any organisation not represented that they would have liked to have been there and whether they found the format of the event useful, and the following responses were noted

Questions and Comments

·                    Concern at the fact that despite arriving at the event at 4.00 p.m. specifically to speak to one of the Councillors, no Councillors had arrived by 4.45 p.m.

·                    These type of events need to be publicised far more effectively.
