What Do We Do?

We all want Sheffield to be a cleaner, greener city.  Here are some of the things we are doing to make this happen:

  • In 2002, we recycled and composted only 4% of waste.  By creating more recycling bring banks, and the introduction of the blue bin scheme, we now recycle and compost 23% of waste;
  • We have introduced a car club for Council staff to provide access to clean, economical cars on demand;
  • We recycle or recover energy from around 85% of the 240,000 tonnes of domestic waste collected each year;
  • We collect around 20,000 tonnes of paper and card each year through the blue bin scheme;
  • Only 18% of the household waste produced in Sheffield this year will go to landfill – this is an achievement as the national average is 60%;
  • 60% of household waste is burnt and converted to energy.  This is used to heat buildings in and around the city centre and surplus heat is converted to electricity for the national grid;
  • We offer free parking to the very cleanest vehicles, e.g. electric and those running on liquid petroleum gas;
  • We have developed a guide to ecodriving to help reduce emissions from cars and other vehicles;
  • Working with children across Sheffield through the EcoSchools programme, we are helping future generations to reduce their environmental impact.
