Your Say 2007: Climate Change
Following on from the success of last years Your Council, Your Say, further events took place during March, with a focus on the environment and green issues.
One of the biggest challenges facing us all is Climate Change. We asked you to help us set our priorities to tackle this issue, and tell us how we can support you to make a difference.
During March around 4,500 residents attended the Your Council, Your Say marquee on Fargate, as well as area events in Hillsborough and Crystal Peaks. As well as green issues, residents were invited to discuss any other issues affecting Council services with Councillors and officers.
Thousands of Sheffield residents got involved. As well as those who attended the three events, over 1000 individuals wrote and emailed with comments, questions and feedback. Work is ongoing to make sure that each of these responses receives a reply.
The Climate Change - Results showed that:
- 74% felt that improving public transport would have the greatest impact on reducing the city’s carbon footprint
- Over half of those who completed the questionnaire said that more advice should be given to residents and businesses on energy-saving methods
- Over 88% of people said that promotion of the park and ride schemes in the city would help to reduce traffic congestion
- 76% gave strong support for introducing measures to allow buses to travel more freely, with 75% in favour of car sharing schemes and 71% in support of a monthly leave your car at home day
- 32% of residents who completed the questionnaire said that they felt they do not have enough information to reduce their carbon footprint, with 20% saying they feel they are already taking action to do this
- 34% of those who completed the questionnaire felt that if Sheffield were to introduce a carbon offsetting scheme, the money should be used for projects both at home and abroad
Council Leader Jan Wilson said: “I'd like to thank everyone who came along to the events and completed the questionnaire. Your views are vital to our future policies on green issues, and the events were a very useful way of gathering public opinion face to face from local residents on all sorts of issues that are important to you.
There is obviously very strong support for taking positive measures to improve traffic congestion, and there is still more work to be done in providing information and advice on how people can help to improve the environment. This consultation confirms that many of the measures we are already taking are moving us in the right direction, but also shows where we should be placing the emphasis for our future work.”
Details of the questionnaire results, and what the Council will be doing in response, will be sent to all residents in a special ‘Your Council’ supplement, which will be delivered to households in September.
