Sheffield City Council Apprenticeships
If you are looking for a chance to learn new skills, gain qualifications and start a career, an apprenticeship at Sheffield City Council, with one of the Council’s partners, or a local business, could be just what you’re looking for.
Apprentices are recruited every year to work in a wide variety of roles gaining useful on the job experience and training. In addition to this, apprentices can also work towards gaining nationally recognised qualifications such as a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).
Areas of Work
Apprenticeships are available in business and administration, customer service, horticulture, hospitality/catering, care for older people, construction, information technology and painting and decorating. The workplace for an apprenticeship could be within the Council, one of the Council’s partners such as Kier Sheffield or a local business.
Support
Every apprentice is supported by the City Council’s Employment Unit as well as being closely supervised and supported in the host workplace.
Duration
Apprenticeships usually last for a year, but they can last for up to two years.
Salary
If you become a Sheffield City Council Apprentice you will receive a salary, based on your skills, experience, age and ability. It will be at least £80 a week.
Diversity
At the moment, to help the Council recruit a more diverse workforce, there are places specifically for black and minority ethnic people and places for disabled people for business and administration apprenticeships placed in the Council.
Awards
On completion of a Sheffield City Council Apprenticeship, there’s also the chance to win an award. We run the Sheffield City Council Apprenticeship of the Year Awards – that’s great to put on your CV – and also Supervisor of the Year for Apprentices’ line managers as well.
The Apprentices
You can read about three of our apprentices here. Robert Higgins, Hannah Dwyer and Afshan Anwar are all Sheffield City Council Apprentices who, after completing their apprenticeships, are now employed with the Council or with one of the Council’s partners.

To become an apprentice you need to live in Sheffield and no longer be in full time education.
