White British
Service Manager, Housing Solutions
Based in the City Centre
Salary range: £43,239 - £45,702
Mike says: “I manage and develop services for homeless people and for vulnerable people who need accommodation. I’ve worked at Sheffield City Council for nine months.
“Before coming here, I worked in the Homelessness Service for the London Borough of Croydon. I’ve also worked in the voluntary sector providing supported lodgings for vulnerable people. Most recently I spent 12 years working for Manchester City Council in homelessness and supported housing.
“I like my job because it’s about people and helping them find positive solutions. I have a very motivated team who are committed to delivering the best service that they can. As a gay man, I've found the Council to be a very open employer for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people with a good recognition of training and equal opportunity issues, but also a good practical understanding of issues like civil partnerships. I’d recommend the Council as an employer.”

Verneth Lewis
Key facts:
47 years old
Black Caribbean
Community Support Worker
Based in south Sheffield
Salary range: £18,450 - £20,235
“My job is about supporting people who have a physical disability and I help them access different activities such as educational, recreational and employment opportunities. I really enjoy my job. It’s a role that ensures that people with disabilities are not left isolated but are included in society. This enables them to improve their quality of life. I definitely get job satisfaction.
“I’ve worked for the Council since 1986, starting out as a cook in a residential home and then I moved into the health and social care sector. The Council’s a good organisation to work for because there are lots of opportunities to progress your career. There are good policies on health and safety and so on and everything’s in place to help you do your job well. There’s always someone to ask for advice if you need to too.”
