Key facts:

Caribbean
City Centre Ambassador
Based in the City Centre
Salary range: £16,137 - £17,985

Mark says, “The Ambassadors are a visible presence on the streets of Sheffield City Centre assisting the Sheffield public and visitors in all sorts of ways.  We’re also part of major events like the Queen coming to Sheffield City Centre.  It’s great to be part of the city’s life like that.

“I enjoy meeting people in this job, and doing different things every day. People look out for us and I know they’re glad we’re here, making a cleaner, greener and safer Sheffield.

“This is my first job with the Council and I’ve been here for three years.  I’d been made redundant from the steel industry before I saw this job advertised.  I went for it, got it and here I am.  I’d never done anything like this before.

“The Council is a good organisation to work for - good benefits, you get treated fairly and we’re given what we need to do the job.  Working for the Council has worked out for me, so it can for you too.”

Indian
Marketing Officer, Libraries, Archives and Information
Based in the City Centre
Salary range: £25,437 – £26,928

Gurjit says, “My role is to promote the Library Service.  No two days are ever the same in my job.  There’s so much scope to develop the role as it’s a new post, and I can really make it my own.

“I’ve worked for the Council since 1986.  I began in an administrative post, then I got a job in the Library Service as a Multicultural Information Officer.  After that I became a Community Librarian.

“I’ve really benefited from the opportunities that I’ve had to progress and I truly value that.  I’ve always been fortunate to have had very supportive managers.  It is a good place to work.”

Margaret Askham

Key facts:
53 years old
White British
Learning Support Teacher
Based in south Sheffield
Salary range: £30,000+ and allowances

Margaret says, “I work in schools supporting children, their families and school staff when a pupil has special educational needs.

“I’ve been disabled since I was eight when I became an above-the-knee amputee because of a road traffic accident.  I visit many different schools and I need lots of different materials with me.  Carrying them can be really awkward, so I keep some in every school I visit and I use a laptop funded with help from Access to Work.   I’ve got my own parking space and handrails installed around the building.

“This is the sort of job that inspires you.  Every day is different.  I have some lovely colleagues and a very supportive team.  My disability means I can empathise with children and young people who, for whatever reason, feel they’re not performing at the same rate as their classmates.

“I would encourage other disabled people to work here.”
