Black British
Senior Planning Officer in the Early Years Education and Childcare Service
Based in the City Centre
Salary range: £29,859 - £32,487

Janette says, “My job is about the long term planning of childcare and early years services in Sheffield.  I started work here in 1993, in Social Services and then I moved into Education.  During this time I’ve developed a vast range of skills, knowledge and experience and I use most of it on a daily basis.

“I have a real commitment to children and young families.  I’ve based my career on that and I’ve really enjoyed it.

“The Council provides a lot of services and we have a lot of influence in the city.  Partnership working adds even more weight to what we do so by working here you’re really part of making a difference to the city.

“I like the flexibility and the balance between work, life and family that’s available at the Council.  I’ve had some very good development opportunities too.  This is a great place to work.  I look forward to the daily challenges the job presents.”

White British
Human Resources Consultant
Based in the City Centre
Salary range: £29,859 – £32,487

Claire says, “My job involves developing, consulting on, implementing and advising on human resources policy.  I’ve worked here since June 2005.  Before that I worked for the Department for Work and Pensions for 6 years.

“I am disabled.  I’ve got hyper-mobility syndrome and I also experience chronic pain.  I’ve got a touch pad mouse for my computer, voice activated software and a specially designed chair partly funded by Access to Work.

“My medication means it is very difficult for me to get in early in the morning so having flexible start times is good for me.  Also being able to work from home is useful.  My manager and colleagues have all been very supportive.

“Working in human resources means you can have a real impact on the quality of Council employees’ working lives, so I know my job matters.  I’d recommend working here to anyone - there are many different jobs and roles, so there’s something to interest most people.”

British Pakistani
Planning Officer
Based in the City Centre
Salary range: £27,492 - £29,010

Billy says, “In my job I assess planning applications - requests for permission to construct buildings, extensions and so on.  I deal with enquiries from the public and I represent the Council on planning issues at public meetings.

“I’ve worked here since 1989 gaining my qualifications as a planner during this time, funded by the City Council.  Before this job, I was a civil servant.

“I like the fact that I can go out on to building sites and meet different people.  I also like the fact that I’m helping to shape the way that Sheffield develops.  It’s satisfying to see a nice building where you’ve had some input.

“In my time here, I've worked alongside some fantastic people and have made some great friends.  There are good wages, flexible working hours and I’m located in the City Centre in a new building using modern equipment.  There are good opportunities for training and developing personal skills.

“Working here is a great starting point for developing your work and life skills, so yes, I would encourage others to come and work here.”
