How to Use the Job Site
You can apply for jobs at Sheffield City Council in three ways:
- Completing an application form online
- Download a form in MS Word to fill in and return as an email attachment
- Print off a picture data format (pdf) copy of the form to complete and send back by post
If you don't have MS Word or Adobe Acrobat Reader, a link will be provided to download the software needed.
Completing an online application form
If you prefer, you can disconnect from the Internet while you fill the form in. Your connection will be restored when you submit your application form.
We would also recommend that you create your application details in a word processing package, so you can spell check before cutting and pasting into the form.
Remember to print off a copy of your application before you send it - you may need it if you're selected for interview!
Downloading a form in MS Word and returning as an email attachment
The application form is available to users of Win 95 (or newer word versions).
Once the application form opens, save it to your desktop. Complete the application form in Word; save it and then attach it to an email. The email address you need to send your application to will be shown on the full vacancy details screen for the post you're applying for.
If on opening the “saved” application form, you see the words FORM TEXT, where you are asked to input your details, your PC’s settings will need adjusting slightly. To help you do this, easy step-by-step instructions are given below:
- Close the “saved” application form
- Still in Word – open new blank document
- Click on Tools
- Click on Options
- Select the View tab
- De-select Field Codes
- Click OK
- Close dialogue box
- Re-open the Application Form
- The shaded areas should return to blank field codes that will allow you to enter text

Printing off a copy of the form and returning by post
Print off the pdf version of the application form and complete it by hand or on a typewriter. Then post it to the address shown on the full vacancy details screen for the post you're applying for. Please note if you post an application form you should enclose a stamp-addressed envelope if you wish to receive an acknowledgement.
