Arriving on Foot and Bike

New Spaces and Routes

Public spaces and pedestrian routes
New spaces and routes for pedestrians and cyclists will be created and old ones improved.

Existing spaces like Fitzalan Square, Devonshire Green, Tudor Square and Barkers Pool will be improved. Tree lined boulevards, including wider pavements which allow seating, and cafes and shops that open on to the street, will be created on Charter Row, Charter Square, Eyre Street, Furnival Square and the remaining sections of Arundel Gate.

Enlargement of the Public Spaces and Pedestrian Routes map.

There will be level foot crossings and high quality sitting or activity areas and squares. Access to car parking and public transport will be retained.

Private motor vehicles will be largely discouraged in major public spaces such as Tudor Square, Barkers Pool and the City  Hall precincts.

Barriers to access for prams and those in wheelchairs and with walking difficulties will be removed. For instance, by the proposed replacement of lifts and escalators in the Roxy/Odeon building. Unpopular pedestrian subways and bridges will be removed. More signal controlled crossings with traffic calming features, eg on Division Street, will be installed.

Safe and Attractive Routes

Parking for cycles and motor bikes will be provided in new schemes and on existing streets, including some covered and more secure facilities. Safe routes for cycling will be extended, notably on Charter Row, Eyre Street and along the River Don out towards Hillsborough.

Barkers Pool

Barkers Pool and City Hall Precincts
The plans for Barkers Pool incorporate:

  • Private motor vehicles largely discouraged in Barkers Pool and the City Hall precincts. Access and parking for disabled drivers and taxis will be retained for the City Hall and for adjoining buildings.
  • A new waiting shelter for taxi passengers.
  • New stone paving throughout, similar in quality to that in Peace Gardens and new seating.
  • An avenue of new mature trees around City Hall allowing old trees of unsuitable species whose roots are seriously undermining the footways to be replaced.
  • Ceremonial role of the space enhanced by removing unnecessary clutter like the circular steps and planters.
  • Additional memorial plaques around the Cenotaph to commemorate the dead of other wars.
  • Removing trees which obscure view of the City Hall frontage.
  • A new water feature celebrating the original Barkers Pool.
  • Relocation of the restored Crimean War memorial, part of which is currently in the Botanical Gardens, to Barkers Pool.
  • Pedestrianisation of part of Holly Street with wider pavements, creating opportunities for tables and chairs in front of planned new cafes.
  • A new public urinal which rises out of the paving to serve night time users of the area.
