Voting

Overview

Overview

You can vote in person, by post or you can appoint someone else to vote on your behalf, which is called voting by proxy. You can do this in any type of election, whether it's a general election, a local council election or a referendum.

Before an election or referendum, we will send all eligible registered voters a poll card, which will give information about the poll and when polling day is.

You must be aged 18 or over to be eligible to vote, but you may register to vote from the age of 16.

From 4 May 2023 you’ll also need to show photo ID when voting in person.

You must be registered to vote before you can vote in UK elections or referendums.
