Sheffield - where everyone matters

Carers Strategy

At least 1 in 10 of Sheffield people provide unpaid support to their family or friends.

Are you one of them?
Are you likely to become one of them in the future?

We have created a new strategy for carers in Sheffield.

Background to the Strategy

Sheffield Health and Wellbeing Partnership Board has been working with Carers to develop a new strategy.  This is to improve Carers’ lives, ensure that they are identified and that their contribution to society is recognised and valued.  This strategy builds on previous local strategies and aims to take a more coordinated approach.

Who is a Carer?

A Carer is someone who ‘spends a significant proportion of their life providing unpaid support to family or friends.  This could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has a mental health or substance misuse problem’.  The strategy is for all Carers, particularly those who aren’t recognised, including Carers from black and minority ethnic communities and young Carers.

Carers in Sheffield make an enormous contribution to the life of the city.  They are essential partners in providing care and support for the most vulnerable of our citizens.  Carers contribute to the development of services, are part of the local workforce, schools and universities, volunteers in the community, they campaign to raise the profile of Carers and improve their quality of life.

How Many People are Carers?

There are approximately 56,000 adult carers in Sheffield, 1 in 10 of the population, and there could be at least 2,000 young Carers.  We estimate that no more than a quarter of Carers are in touch with statutory or voluntary agencies.  This means that there are at least 40,000 Carers whose caring responsibilities and needs are unknown in Sheffield.

Consultation and Feedback

The consultation period has now ended and the feedback is being analysed.  Thank you to all who have responded.

Next Stages

  • The strategy will be finalised and agreed by the Sheffield First for Health and Well-Being Board, taking into account people's comments and views.
  • The 3 priority objectives will be identified.
  • The outcome of the consultation will be circulated and posted on this website along with the process for implementation of the strategy.
