How Can I Get Help as a Carer

Who are carers?

If you are looking after a relative, friend or neighbour who cannot manage on his or her own due to illness, disability or frailty, then you are a carer.

What help is available?

There are lots of kinds of help available. However, you should always remember that the services that you and the person you care for may be offered, depends on your circumstances and the outcome of an assessment (please see the ‘What is an assessment and what’s involved’ sheet in this information file for more information)

The sorts of things that might be included are

  • Help with bathing or dressing and other personal care
  • Respite care and short breaks from caring
  • Adaptations to where you live, and equipment
  • Residential and supported accommodation
  • Occupational therapy
  • Day care services
  • Lunch clubs and/or provision of meals
  • Transport

But again remember that what may be offered will depend on your particular circumstances.

How to get help

For you as a carer, getting a service is very closely tied to needs of the person you are looking after. Usually, you will need to go through a process of assessment, although if your needs are especially urgent it may be possible for services to be provided immediately with an assessment being made later.

To ask for an assessment of need, you should contact the Adults' Access Team telephone (0114) 273 4908 or fax (0114) 273 6263 (for all adult services)

Or you can go in person to First Point, the Council’s one-stop-shop. Howden House, on Union Street (near the Peace Gardens) in the City Centre. It is open from 8:30 to 5:30 Monday to Friday.
