ReachOut DVD - the DVD that talks to you!

ReachOut DVD image
We as a service want to make a direct connection with Older People from all communities living in Sheffield. One of the ways in which we're doing this is by communicating directly with members of the community who have English as a second language through a DVD.

The DVD, which lasts 15 minutes, talks directly to the older person. It gives information about the services available for older people who live in Sheffield.

The DVD can be watched in four of the most common languages used by older people in the city, Arabic, Somali, Urdu and English.

Below is a case study*, which shows how the DVD might benefit an older person.

Talking about services for older people
Mrs Khan lives with her husband who suffered a stroke six months ago. Mrs Khan receives some help from her daughter in law who works full time. The family were struggling to care for Mr Khan and her son had contacted social services for help.

Mrs Khan is able to speak some English but her social worker Ann had difficulty helping her understand the role of social services and the various ways the service might be able to help her.

Ann loaned the family a copy of the Reach Out DVD to watch at home.

After seeing the DVD Mrs Khan requested an assessment for respite care. She's now supported in her role as a carer. Using direct payments Mrs Khan as been able to purchase regular sitting service twice weekly and respite care at home four times a year, allowing her to visit her family who live outside Sheffield on dates suitable to herself.

* This case study is fictional and has no connection with any service user known to the department.
