Buying equipment
If you're struggling with doing everyday things around the home, you might be surprised to find what's available to help.
Try visiting one of the local shops where you can see and try out equipment for making daily living easier. You'll see all sorts of things, from small gadgets for opening jam jars to electric scooters. The staff will be happy to show you what there is, and give you advice.

- Wicker Mobility Shop - (0114) 272 3729
If you'd rather do your shopping at home, you could choose from a mail order catalogue. The companies listed below are just a few of those which offer home shopping for equipment and gadgets:

When you just need something for a short time
Sometimes you only need equipment for a short term. Perhaps a relative is coming to stay and you need to borrow a wheelchair or a commode.
For a loan of equipment for up to eight weeks contact British Red Cross - (01709) 879451 or (0114) 266 0656.
Sheffield Community Equipment Loan Service (SCELS) have equipment available, on loan, for those who are in need of health care equipment, or who are temporarily, or permanently disabled.
Sheffield Primary Care Trust, Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Care Trust jointly provide this website.
Patients, clients, their carers and relatives can, at a glance, view equipment at any time of the day or night. Medical professionals (GP's, Therapists and District Nurses) have the additional ability to requisition equipment for their patients and clients online. The equipment shown on this website may not be available to all referrers.
The shops listed previously also hire out some items.

Getting help from your Doctor
Your local doctor's surgery is the place to ask about getting three different sorts of help. Speak to your doctor or community nurse about:
- things that help you get around, such as a zimmer frame, crutches or wheelchair
- things to help with problems with getting to the toilet on time, such as pads or a commode
- equipment for someone who needs nursing care at home, such as a specialist bed or a hoist.
Getting things fixed
If there are little jobs that need doing to make your home safer, you could get in touch with the Home Safety Check Scheme. They work with elderly and disabled people, and can do things like fit handrails for about half the usual cost. Contact the Home Safety Check scheme (0114) 275 5216.
Age Concern Sheffield's Handyperson scheme can do small fixing jobs around the home for people aged 55 and over, if there's no-one else around to help. They just charge the cost of the materials. Contact the Handyperson Scheme on (0114) 250 2875/2877.
If it's small-scale repairs and improvements to your home that are needed, Stayput may be the answer. They can arrange for the work to be done, and may be able to get you a grant to cover the cost. Contact Stayput on (0114) 275 5216.
