Help & Advice for Children with Disabilities

There are a range of agencies offering help, advice and support to children with disabilities and their families.  These include health services, education, social services and voluntary agencies.

There are services which children, young people and parents can go to direct for help, advice and support and there are other services that require an assessment of you and your child's needs and circumstances before a service may be offered.

How to Register your Child as ‘Disabled’ – Join the Sheffield INDEX

The Sheffield INDEX of Children and Young People with Disabilities is the ‘Child Disability Register’ for Sheffield.  It is based at the Ryegate Childrens Centre.  It is a confidential, secure database service that holds all necessary information about children and young people with ANY disability or life-altering health condition, aged 0-19, in the Sheffield area.

Parents/Carers must contact the Sheffield INDEX to register their child as ‘Disabled’ – no child is just added ‘automatically’ to the register without the full permission of the childs parents.  You are responsible for choosing to register your child as being ‘Disabled’.

The information on the Sheffield INDEX is used for:

  • planning
  • providing important information to the government
  • asking you and your family what you need
  • circulating information to everyone on the Sheffield INDEX

In return for being on the Sheffield INDEX you will receive regular copies of the essential childrens disability newsletter ‘What’s Going On’, it is full of useful information about services and new developments across the city.  You will also receive a registration certificate that proves your child has a disability, plus a pack of information tailored to the needs of your child.
