Respite Care for People with a Disability
What is respite care?
Respite care is provided for people with a disability to give them and/or their carer a break. Respite care can be:
- provided in your own home
- a stay in a residential or nursing home
- provided by the Adult Family Placement Scheme
- day activities
Social Services will carry out an assessment of your needs. Respite care is provided if it is identified in the assessment that you need respite care and are eligible to receive it.
Who do I contact?

Will I have to pay for respite care?
If you have respite care in your own home, or through the Adult Family Placement Service or day activities, the person who carries out your assessment of needs will explain how we work out how much you'll have to contribute towards the cost of services you receive. There will be a separate financial assessment that also takes account of any expenditure you have that is directly related to your disability. This will determine how much you will have to pay.
If you're going into residential or nursing care for a short period of time (56 continuous days or less) you'll have to pay a flat rate charge for your care. For more information, see What about paying for short term (respite) care?
