What support do we give to family carers?

Carers assessment

If you are a carer of someone with a learning disability we will ask you about the amount and range of care you and others provide. We take this into account when we decide what services and support we can give to the person that you care for.

If there are clear signs that you and other carers may not be able to carry on in your caring role, you should receive a carers impact assessment. We will ask you questions about how your caring role affects other aspects of your life. However if the person you care for does not qualify for support from social services you will not normally receive a carers impact
assessment.

Older carers

We provide an older carers support service to support older family carers of people with a learning disability. The service has two visitors who help

  • single carers over the age of 70 who are caring alone
  • caring couples who are both over the age of 80
  • carers who are over the age of 70 and having difficulties
