Making Life Easier at Home
If you’re struggling with doing everyday things around the home, you might be surprised to find what’s available to help. You'll find lots of useful information and contact numbers below.
Buying equipment
Try visiting one of the local shops where you can see and try out equipment for making daily life easier. You’ll see all sorts of things, from small gadgets for opening jam jars to electric scooters. The staff will be happy to show you what there is, and give you advice.
- Clark and Partners (0114) 229 3399
- Wicker Mobility Shop (0114) 272 3729
If you’d rather do your shopping at home, you could choose from a mail order catalogue. The companies listed below are just a few of those, which offer home shopping for equipment and gadgets
- British Red Cross 0870 739 7391 (Ability Mail Order)
- Homecraft Rolyan 08702 423305
The shops above also hire out some items.
When you just need something for a short time
Sometimes you only need equipment short term. Perhaps a relative is coming to stay and you need to borrow a wheelchair or a commode.
For a loan of equipment of up to eight weeks, contact British Red Cross (0114) 266 0656 or
(01709) 879451.
Getting help from us
You can ask us for help if you need to find safer ways to do everyday tasks. We can give advice over the phone or during a home visit. We might be able to provide adaptations to your home, such as a ramp or stairlift.
We might be able to give you equipment to make your home easier to live in, like a high seat to help you use the toilet. We won’t provide most equipment that you could buy yourself for under £50, unless it’s something which needs fitting.
We have to make sure that we help the people who are most in need. This means that we're not able to provide everything that people ask for. If you want to know more, phone (0114) 273 4908 and ask about Equipment and Adaptations, or call at Sheffield’s First Point reception at Howden House in Union Street.

Getting help from your Doctor
Your local Doctor’s surgery is the place to ask about getting three different sorts of help. Speak to your doctor or community nurse about
- things to help you get around, such as a Zimmer frame, crutches or a wheelchair.
- things to help with problems with getting to the toilet on time, such as pads or a commode.
- equipment for someone who needs nursing care at home, such as a specialist bed or a hoist.
Getting things fixed
Home Safety Check Scheme
If there are little jobs which need doing to make your home safer, you could get in touch with the Home Safety Check Scheme. They work with elderly and disabled people, and can do things like fit handrails for about half the usual cost.
You can contact them on (0114) 275 5216.
Handyperson Scheme
Age Concern Sheffield’s Handyperson Scheme can do small fixing jobs around the home for people aged 55 and over, if there’s no-one else around to help. They just charge the cost of the materials.
You can contact them on (0114) 250 2874.
Stayput
If you are a home-owner and repairs are needed Stayput may be able to help. They can arrange for the work to be done and may be able to get you a grant to cover the cost. They also work with home-owners to help keep homes safe, secure and easy to maintain.
They can give free help with advice, surveys, finding builders and maybe with grants.
You can contact them on (0114)275 5216.
