Disabled Facilities Grant

Disabled Facilities Grants are provided for adaptations to the houses of people with disabilities who live in their own homes or privately-rented accommodation.

The amount of money available for grant aid varies from year to year. The number of adaptations supported by grant aid is limited to how much money is available.

When is help available?

A member of our Occupational Therapy team will assess your needs.

We may recommend adaptations or equipment to help you with mobility in and around your home. The amount of time taken to assess cases varies. It depends on the volume of enquiries in your area, how we prioritise your case, and whether funding is available.

You can get more information about how we'll assess your needs at Equipment and Adaptations.

Who do I contact?

To make an application you can contact our Adult Access Team:  (0114) 273 4908 or complete the Adult Access Team online form.

What type of adaptations are available?

The range of options varies depending on your disability and the layout of your home. However it may typically include a stairlift, level access shower, ramp, hoist, internal alterations (widening of doors) etc, or a combination of these items. The service will only provide the minimum needed to keep you safe.

What if my home also needs renovation?

After completing a Disabled Facilities Grant enquiry form, if it is decided that renovation work is needed to your home for the adaptations to work properly, you may be eligible to apply for an essential works grant or assisted to apply for a loan for these works as well. A simple example would be that a grant could not be given for a stairlift if the electrical system was unsafe.

How much can I get?

Disabled Facilities are subject to a ‘test of resources’. A means test will be carried out which will look at your income and savings to work out your contribution. The maximum payable for a mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant is £25,000.

Who will carry out the means test?

The means test will be carried out by our Private Sector Housing Services, who can be contacted by telephone: 0114 273 4646 or fax: 0114 2735526.
