Home Support
What help is available?
Home Carers support people who have difficulty looking after themselves or managing essential household tasks, so that they can continue to live in their own home and be as independent as possible.
We may arrange this service using our own home care workforce, or we will buy the service from another home care agency.
The service is also available where:
- people are being looked after by relatives or friends, and the carer needs help to manage
- parents of a child with a severe disability need help with the care provided
Home Care workers offer:
- personal care such as washing and dressing, and
- emotional support and encouragement.
Help with shopping may be provided as part of a care package for people unable to do their shopping and who have no relative, friend or neighbour able to help.
If necessary someone can call several times a day.
A culturally appropriate service is also available for Sheffield's Yemeni, Somali, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Chinese communities.
Who do I need to contact?
Social Services provides a home support service subject to an assessment of your needs. The service will be provided by carers from Social Services or a privately run agency.
Contact the Social Services Access Team on (0114) 273 4908 or complete an online form - see the Getting Help from Social Services section.
Will I need to pay for home support?
There is a standard charge for the service whatever help we give, although many people on income support receive a free service. We offer all home care clients benefits advice to make sure they get all the benefits they should be getting.

If you have an enquiry or problem about how Social Services assess your finances, see the Contact for Financial Assessment section.
You can also make your own arrangements and pay for you own care. You can view details of home support providers in the Cleaning, Shopping and Practical Support section.

Meals Delivery
There are a number of private companies providing meals delivery services. See Have Your Meals Delivered for more information.
Social Services also offers a meals service called a 20 minute home support call. If you receive this service it is your choice what you eat providing it can be cooked within the 20 minutes. Our staff have been trained to advise you of certain foods which would be useful for you to eat in terms of keeping healthy and fit and to meet with any special dietary requirements.
Any frozen or chilled meals bought by you from a supermarket could be reheated within the 20 minute call but there is no guarantee that the nutritional standards will be met.
Social Services can also provide support with ethnically appropriate meals and this includes a hot meal delivery.
If you want to receive a meals service from Social Services you will need to have an assessment of your needs. Contct the Social Services Access Team on 0114 273 4908.
