Adult Family Placement Service (AFPS)
What is Adult Family Placement?
Adult family placements are placements in the community with people (referred to as approved carers) who are recruited, trained and supported by the Adult Family Placement Service. The approved carers can provide overnight respite, long term and day support placements in their own homes to all adult service users. Approved carers also befriend and support service users to access leisure and other community activities. The placements can also provide respite to family/primary carers.
How can I get a placement from Adult Family Placement?
If you meet the Fair Access to Care Criteria you can be referred to the AFPS by your assessing care manager/social worker. We will link and match you to an approved carer who has the skills and knowledge to meet your support needs. You can be provided with information about the approved carer and their family to help you decide if you want to meet them. There is always an introductory visit and you can bring along a family member or friend. Any decision to go ahead with the placement is taken with your full involvement and agreement.
Do I have to pay for the placement?
There is a service user contribution for overnight respite and long term placements. Day support placements are subject to Fairer Charging.
How can I become an Adult Placement approved carer?
The service is always seeking to recruit new carers from Sheffield’s diverse community. We have approved carers of different ages, from different backgrounds and cultures, male and female, living alone or in a family unit.
Following an enquiry an initial interest pack is sent out. An AFPS worker will arrange to visit you to give more information about the service and what will be required from you as an approved carer.
If you decide to proceed you will be invited to a pre-approval course, after which an assessment is undertaken by one of the AFPS workers. This will include CRB, reference, health and other checks. The completed assessment is presented to an independent panel for a decision about approval. Once approved you will receive ongoing training and learning opportunities and will be supported and reviewed by an AFPS worker. An allowance is paid for each placement made with you.
How is the service regulated?
The AFPS is registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection and their latest inspection report can be found via the link above.
The AFPS is also a member of the National Association of Adult Placement Services (NAAPS).
