Adult Placement - Shared Lives

Woman and man chatting
The Adult Placement – Shared Lives service recruits, trains and supports carers. We then link people who need help, with people who can provide it.

We help vulnerable adults who may have difficulties managing on their own. We can offer companionship and encouragement towards more independence, support to do everyday things, the chance to try new activities or revisit old ones and to get out and
about. We also offer the opportunity to live in a family environment and provide breaks for carers.

What services do we provide?

We can help by providing care services and placements with approved carers

  • Long term care
  • Short term care
  • Respite
  • Day care
  • Sitting
  • Befriending

Who are the services for?

We arrange support for vulnerable adults who have difficulties managing on their own or who need extra support or help during a difficult time.

They may have a learning, physical or sensory disability, be an older person or have mental health difficulties.

How to get a service?

We are only able to offer a service to people who meet our Fair Access to Care criteria. To get a service a person must be referred by a Social Worker or Care Manager.  We will then try and match with an approved carer. We will provide information and arrange an introductory visit.

We take great care to ensure that our carers are matched with a person whose needs they can meet and placements only go ahead if everyone is happy.

There is a charge for these services.  How much or whether a person has to pay depends on the service provided and their individual financial circumstances.

Becoming a carer

Our carers are ordinary people. They are all ages, men and women and come from different family situations and ethnic backgrounds reflecting the population of Sheffield.

Anyone over 18 can apply to be a carer. No special qualifications are required but carers must have a flexible and positive approach to be able to care for the needs of other people.
We provide all our carers with two and a half days preparation and give ongoing mandatory training and support.

Carers receive allowances and expenses on a self employed basis.

They offer as little or as much time as they can spare from a few hours a week to having someone come to stay in their home overnight, for a few days or longer term.

We are always looking to recruit new carers so why not get in touch for an informal chat? Our contact details are at the bottom of this page.  If you are interested we will come to see you to talk more about the service, what you could offer and what is involved in becoming a carer.

How is the service regulated?

The service is registered with the Care Quality Commission and has to meet National Standards. You can view their latest inspection report at Care Quality Commission.

We are a member of the National Association of Adult Placement Services (NAAPS). Carers can also benefit from NAPPS membership.
