Floods 2007 National Conference Lessons Learned for Social Care
Following the serious floods of June and July 2007, affecting several areas in the UK, Roy Taylor (Director of Community Services for the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and ADASS Lead on Civil Contingency) and Eddie Sherwood (Head of Care4you & Deputy Head, Community Care Neighbourhoods and Community Care, Sheffield) convened a conference on behalf of ADASS for those local authorities who had been most affected.
The aim of the conference was to study which lessons for social care could be learned from the experiences.
The conference was also co-sponsored by by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) and Care Services Improvement Partnerships (CSIP).
The conference, held at Sheffield United Football Club on Wednesday 10 October, brought together 60 social care professionals and emergency planners as well as Government advisors, academics, and Help the Aged UK, which is leading research on the 'vulnerability of older people in emergencies in the UK'.
The conference provided an opportunity to share the learning from directly affected local authorities and full details can be viewed on these web pages.
The conference findings will be conveyed to all Directors of Social Care in England, and also to the Pitt Review into the flooding of 2007.
The Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Arthur Dunworth, opened the conference and described aspects of the response and recovery in Sheffield.
