A Brief Word About Each

Child Protection Enquiries

The 1989 Children Act places a duty on the Children & Young People’s Service to make enquiries following concerns and/or allegations being raised regarding children and young people in their area.  Such concerns may be raised by anyone but the enquiry about your child/children will be led by staff from the Children & Young People’s Service.

Child Protection Case Conferences

A Child Protection Conference is a meeting called following enquiry, when there are reasons to think that a child may have been abused or neglected and may be at continued risk of harm.  It brings together family members, people who know the child and family, and others experienced in working in child protection.  It is organised by the Children & Young People's Service, and usually held in one of their offices, but is run on behalf of the Sheffield Safeguarding Children Board, which represents all the different agencies in Sheffield responsible for child protection.

The Child Protection Register

A Child Protection Conference may decide that a child’s name should be put onto the Child Protection Register.

The Register is a highly confidential list of children who are known or believed to have been abused or injured in some way, or who are thought to be at risk of injury, abuse or neglect and have a protection plan in place.  The Register is kept by the Children & Young People’s Service.  It is strictly confidential and information from it is available only to professional people such as Health Visitors, Teachers, Doctors, Police Officers and Social Workers.
