How we can resolve abuse

We take all reports of abuse very seriously. We’ll listen to you and help to stop the abuse. We’ll ask you for basic information about the problem, either what’s happening to you, or what you’ve heard, been told, seen, or suspect. We’ll treat the information you give us in the strictest of confidence.

How cases are resolved

It's important that you know the stages involved with resolving cases. If you download the case flowchart at the bottom of this page, you can see how a case moves along from suspecting abuse through to safeguarding plans.

Case studies

Karen, aged 22, has learning difficulties and lives in her own flat. She has a new boyfriend who has moved in with her. Karen’s aunt lives nearby and sees her niece every day. She becomes concerned when she only ever sees the couple together on the days that Karen goes to collect her benefits. Karen tells her that he is looking after the money for her, and then admits that she never sees a penny.

Outcome
A call to the Adult Access Team leads to Karen being helped and an investigation into whether her money is being stolen.

Cynthia, aged 75, has had a stroke and her husband David is caring for her at home. With no family living locally, he is the sole carer. He looks tired but when the next door neighbour offers to help, David says he is coping and everything is fine. But sometimes the neighbour can hear David shouting at Cynthia through the wall, and she knows that caring can be very hard work.

Outcome
The neighbour contacts the Adult Access Team in confidence, and David is relieved to be offered an assessment of his needs as a carer. Now a home carer visits Cynthia regularly and she also receives respite care to give David a much-needed break.
