This page outlines what the Expert Elders Network does and how you can join.
Expert Elders - Why?
Sheffield’s population is getting older. Over the next 25 years the number of people in the city aged 65+ will rise from around 83,000 to 103,000.
With our partners we're committed to improving the independence, health and well-being of all older people across the city, making sure that older people direct and influence the policy, planning and service delivery of statutory, voluntary and independent agencies.
We want Sheffield to become a healthy ageing city where older people enjoy an improved quality of life, health and well-being, as well as taking an active part in safer and stronger communities. To help achieve this, Sheffield is one of 19 places in the country that’s piloting a national project. The project will make sure older people influence how care and other services are designed to keep them healthier and active for longer.
The project is called Partnerships for Older People Project or POPPs. It includes a network of ‘expert elders’ from across the city. The expert elders use their experience and views to improve services and the quality of life for older people in our city.
For more detailed information about how the Expert Elders Network operates you can download a copy of the Operational framework for the involvement and engagement of older people in Sheffield, at the bottom of this page.
Expert Elder Network Coordinators
To help set up the network we've appointed three Expert Elder Network Coordinators.
Their role is to identify older people willing to become elder experts. They make sure that older people from groups that are traditionally harder to reach and are under represented are encouraged to get involved. Elder experts will receive support and training to help them develop their skills and confidence, so they can influence the development and planning of services.

Achievement
The target for the first year of the network being established was 90 older people. This target was achieved in just the first six months of the programme. The response from older people has been tremendous. To date, there have been 18 requests from organisations for Expert Elder involvement and the number of Expert Elders stands at over 180.
